Michelangelo sibyl from the Sistine Chapel

some more escapism

For the first time in nearly a month, I made it to the movies this afternoon and I think that I made a pretty good choice this time around. Rather than a drama, I opted for something less cerebral and went straight for the special effects of Pitch Black and I liked it. From the very beginning I knew that most if not all of the characters were going to die and that was just what I needed to keep me awake through the afternoon.

There were a few things in the movie that I thought worked pretty well. First of all one would imagine that on a planet with three suns, the sky and lighting would be a little more harsh than it is on earth and I think that they captured that perfectly on film through the use of filters. Maybe some people found it annoying, but I thought that having everything on the screen appear washed out was rather clever. Only when the characters were inside under artificial light did the colors seem more vibrant or closer to what we usually see.

The second thing that the movie had going for it was that I didn't recognize any of the actors so I could think of them solely as their characters. I think that if the movie had been done with better known people it would have seemed cheesy. Having a cast of relative unknown people helped me believe the story.

Oh, I suppose that I could have waited to rent it a few months later, but at the time it seemed better than taking a nap at home.
