the byzantine world

Far away I could hear a telephone ringing. One ring. Two rings. I rolled over in bed. At three rings I looked at the clock. It was five in the afternoon. I told myself that I had to get up for work soon. Then I remembered that it was Sunday and for the first time in days I didn't have to go to work.

Warm tangled sheets and blankets. Outside my window cold rain was still falling. After crossing the plains, the storm that gave the west coast so much grief brought us rain instead of snow. It was more annoying than threatening. I didn't want to go anywhere.

The phone stopped ringing with ring number five. Either the answering machine had taken over or the person had hung up. I wouldn't know for sure until I got out of bed. So I did.

...

When I walked into work last night, Ann was busy studying for her upcoming exam, so I kept my distance and waited until she was ready to talk. The overall mood was so different from the previous night, but I didn't mind. People can't always connect on the same level every day and that made the fun that we had on Friday night seem that much more memorable.

...

Most of today was devoted to just relaxing. No plans had been made and that didn't bother me. The entire day was mine and it felt good.
