three star belt

Thankfully work was slow last night and that forty-five minute block of time with Nicole that I mentioned happened at the end of the morning. I couldn't think of a better way to end a day at work than spending time with her. No one else in my department seemed to miss me while I was chatting with her. My boss was gone for the day and the remaining members of the group were casually surfing the web when I returned. Friday was here for them and they were enjoying it.

...

Clouds followed me home from work and probably affected my mood. I can't say for certain though.

My fourth rental of the week was the somewhat arthouse film Sunshine with Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz. Fiennes plays multiple roles in the film, which is interesting, but I'm not sure why Weisz got to be on the box cover for the movie. Her role is so small compared to his in the film. Maybe her being in the Mummy films did make her a bigger star. Then again maybe they were just going for the romance element in promoting the film.

Three hours later I'd have to say that it was one of the most depressing films that I have seen in a while. The film follows one Jewish family in Hungary through the beginning of the twentieth century with Ralph playing grandfather, then father and then finally son. We get to see one generation after the next suffer changing moods towards them and their place in Europe.

It wasn't a preachy film, but it certainly said quite a bit about the madness of Europe in the beginning of the twentieth century. These people hate these people and those people hate those people. Naturally this is still going on today in certain parts of Europe, but we haven't had what we would call a world war again.
