the two catherines

On the local news they said that there was a shooting and subsequent murder twelve blocks from where I used to live two years ago. I wasn't shocked by the news. Instead I wondered if that meant that I moved away just in time. Then again I think that there had been another shooting at the same intersection when I was still living there.

Rick Steves was in Stockholm and Helsinki talking about what to see and do there. I had seen the episode once before, but it meant more to me this time since I had been to both places a year ago. This meant that I recognized most of what Steve recommended and it also stirred up some fond memories. However, I also knew where there had been some careful editing. For example, the church carved into a rock in Helsinki is impressive, but isn't in that grand of a spot. From what I remember, the church is at the end of a street that is less than impressive.

Maybe I'm strange, but I found it amusing to shout out the names of sites before Rick said them. Why I did this I have no idea since he couldn't hear me and no one else was with me watching the program.

The second and final part of the program The Six Wives of Henry VIII aired tonight and I was there to watch it. If I knew little about the first two, the final four were even more unknown to me. Of the group, the one that generated the most sympathy from me was Anne of Cleves. The poor German girl was less than attractive to Henry and he wanted nothing to do with her. Sadly she didn't seem to realize this fact until he was making plans to get rid of her so that he could have someone else. In the end she did quite well for herself in terms of wealth and security after having been dismissed. I saw that as a better alternative to losing her head.
