stories with animals Being stranded in a boat on the ocean for months is not high on my list of things to do in life, but it does make for some great reading. Life of Pi told such a story and I finished it today. Even knowing from the very beginning of the book that the main character was going to live didn't take away from the story; then again I don't read books for plots. I am not a plot person. Guessing the ending of something is not what keeps me reading a story. The language that the author uses or the way that a character might see the world is what interests me in a book and or story. For me there were elements of the classic novel Lord of the Flies. The longer that Pi was in the boat, the further he moved down the civilized ladder. At first he was a vegetarian who cringed when he killed his first fish by breaking its neck. By the end he was able to slaughter a turtle without a second thought to what he was doing. He knew that he had to take the life of other animals in order to survive. His whole mental process had changed. |
