farther room music

Yesterday when I was wandering around in Barnes and Noble looking for a present for Sweetest Day, I made my way into the music section to see if anything caught my eye. Naturally something did get my attention and it didn't take long. Staring out from the cover of the disc was this young woman who was seated on stone steps with a violin lying on the ground next to her. That image was enough to get me to put the headphones on my head and listen to what she could do. Plus the song titles listed on the back were also appealing to me. If someone has a song called Samarkand, I have to hear it.

I liked what I heard, but I didn't succumb to impulse shopping. Besides I was there for someone else and not myself.

Later in the day when I got home and did some research online, I learned that Music From A Farther Room was the debut effort of Lucia Micarelli. That name meant nothing to me and her association with Josh Groban was also lost on me. My only real exposure to Josh Groban was seeing bumper stickers with his name adorning cars near the college campus. His music was completely unknown to me.

...

On a different music front, I see that both R.E.M. and U2 are releasing new discs and I'm not sure what to think about that anymore. Twenty years ago I loved Murmur and The Unforgettable Fire, but over time I moved away from what they were doing. Maybe I should take another look and see if I am missing anything worthwhile.
