some serious drama Here are my thoughts on the three most recent films that I have seen either through rental or on cable television: Elizabeth I English history has always has been an interest of mine so I was eager to see what Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons were going to bring to the latest film about Elizabeth the first on HBO. Now having seen it, I have to say that the two of them did a nice job, but I have no idea as to whether or not their portrayal was historically accurate. Putting that issue aside, I am always intrigued by these people who shaped the world centuries ago. They seem more grand than current leaders, but that might be the sheen of history elevating them. Before I watched the two part production I knew that despite never marrying Elizabeth had some male suitors in the course of her life, but wasn't sure how close these men got to her and what the public knew of these liaisons. I suspect that this version was closer to history than the Cate Blanchett film that made her famous. Now I have nothing against Cate or that film in general. Actually I was quite fond of it and her performance. It impressed me so much that I am looking forward to the sequel that is being made with her. In this second installment we will get to see her relationship with Sir Walter Raleigh. Million Dollar Baby Yes, I am a little behind in watching Oscar winning films, but without any hesitation at all, I have to say that loved it. Hilary Swank deserved to win and so did the film as best picture. Not knowing anything beyond the fact that it was a boxing movie made the ending that much more powerful for me. Morgan Freeman has also gained some more respect from me. He has come a long way from being Easy Reader on the Electric Company back on PBS in the 1970's. Rory O'Shea Was Here Self determination really affects me strongly and the performances made me love this film. Quite simply it was very human and didn't slide into cliche and or sentimetality. Plus it was nice seeing Romola Garai again. I had last seen her as Becky Sharp's best friend in the Reese Witherspoon production of Vanity Fair. |
