the hard part

Tonight another great episode of the NBC show Heroes aired and I am curious to see how the season ends in two weeks. Now that they have returned to the past that we the viewer know, I have to wonder how many questions will be answered before the summer break. Will someone die this season as the previews hint at from time to time? Will there be enough intrigue to bring me back in the fall? I cannot answer the first question, but I am fairly certain that my answer to the second question will be yes.

I remember when someone at work first mentioned the program to me before it had even aired. He showed me the teaser where Claire films herself falling from a considerable height, fatally injuring herself and then standing up and walking away from it. At the time, it only looked mildly interesting, because I thought that it was going to be a one-time shock kind of thing. I was wrong in making that judgment. Now that the season is almost over, I would have to say that I like it almost as much as I do lost on ABC, because both programs have great ensemble casts and intertwining stories that grow with each new episode. However, I must admit that the pacing of Heroes moves quicker than what we have seen with Lost. In some ways this might be yet another positive for the show.

Returning my focus to tonight's episode, I appreciate how well Claire and Peter have been interacting together. Yes, there is the family bond between them, but they have only known that they are related for a short amount of time. Essentially they are strangers just starting to know one another. The fact that both of them felt isolated because of their abilities gave them a bond. One could say that this theme has been seen before in the world of comic books, but I think that this is new territory for the world of television. I could be wrong on that point.

Finally, we come to the villain of the series or the man who causes problems for everyone else, Sylar. Here we have a man who hunts his own kind. Here is a man who we have seen kills for pleasure. All of that made sense to me and I liked the determination and certainty that he exhibited in his actions. His interests were of his own design and belonged to no one else. There was no wavering in what he did until now. Suddenly he has started to question his actions and I do not mind this change. A little self-doubt had made him human again. However, if he does not return in the fall, I think that the writers will have done a gross injustice to the series, because I truly believe that he is the most complex character on the program. His presence would be almost impossible to replace.
