human body extremes I do not like clowns. I do not like circuses. I have never liked either of those things and I suspect that I never will. As to why people like clowns and or circuses is something that I can not understand. Now having made that bold statement, I must confess to a vague if not growing fascination with Cirque du Soleil. Through my recent reading on said topic, I have come to learn that the Canadian act known as Cirque du Soleil or CdS as fans of said event refer to it has been around for twenty plus years. During that time, they have refined their look and gathered many supporters of their unique take on performance art via a circus theme. Ever so slowly I am starting to consider myself one of them. Sadly there is a strong clown element to Cirque du Soleil Varekai and that part of the show still annoys me to no end. However, the acrobatic portion of the program amazes me well beyond the point of awe. Seeing four women move deftly around a triple trapeze is something that I could watch for hours. The amount of strength and agility that they possess is a perfect example of what the human body can do if properly trained. Plus I have to admit a fondness for the tight fitting turquoise outfits that they wear while performing their act. Another act from Cirque du Soleil Varekai that I thoroughly enjoyed seeing on DVD was Olga Pikheinko doing her handbalancing on canes. Now I have seen other women gymnasts do handsprings and tumbles, but both of those feats pale in comparison to what she does. Seeing her support her whole body with one hand on a revolving cane is almost superhuman. Plus her act lasts for at least nine minutes according to the track information on the DVD. Oh, she climbs down from the canes for a moment or two to do some floor activity, but she does still spend a long time on the canes. I doubt that I will ever go to see a live performance of Cirque du Soleil, because I would not have the option to fast forward through the awful comedy, but I am seriously considering purchasing a DVD or two of their performances. Seeing these people do things that I thought could only be done inside a comic book is something that I enjoy. ... Now all that remains is just the two hour season finale next week and then we have to wait until the fall to see what happens next to the people on Lost. I have yet to decide if Charlie is going to die or not. The focus has certainly shifted to him lately so that may be a red herring. What I liked the most about tonight's episode was seeing the Looking Glass station and hearing other members of The Others talk besides Ben. There was no sign of John so maybe he really did die. I should have looked to see if his name was still in the opening credits. |
