Journal Roulette

Shelleyness - Good fun! Normally I don't like the big heavy-hitter's journals, but this one's pretty cool. She drinks a lot, which is a plus.

Siobhanorama!

Dear Siobhan,

I take back everything I ever said about you watching Passions. I understand now. You watch it all you want.

Sincerely,
Harold

Passions

My god, it's been slow lately. When did I last update? Last Tuesday? Nothing has happened since then.

Well, I did go running with a friend Wednesday afternoon. She lives over by the lake so we ran along the shore, just east of the Causeway. Nice, kind of like running on Mud Island back in Memphis but here you're right next to the water.

We were discussing the relative cleanliness of the lake.

"It's almost clean enough to swim in," my friend said, "but not along here where we're going to be running."

We walked over the levee and immediately saw a group of people swimming in the boat basin in front of us.

"They might as well be swimming in a toilet," I observed.

Friday Sage sent me some artwork based on the picture I took her. It was very cool, but not quite what I wanted. So we're still working on that.

Speaking of Sage, she had a piece in Tattoo Flash this month. Well done, Sage!

Saturday...it was very hot, wasn't it? Yup. Hot. The Wife and I went to Canal Place and gobbled and spat over the designer clothes. And we went down to the Market to get some vegetables.

And we saw Moulin Rouge. I'm gonna recommend it. The story is weak, which is standard for musicals. Right? But the movie itself will make your eyes explode. It's like something at Universal Studios: Moulin Rouge - The Ride. And Nicole Kidman is ridiculously sexy. And McGregor can sing! Really sing! See it see it see it.

And yesterday? A little reading, a little internet, a little TV. I made some tater tots. We watched the new Sex and the City, which was good, as usual. Wow...Kim Cattrall is really holding up well, huh? I wonder if she ever thinks about any of the old gang from Porky's?

I went back to the Mitsubishi place today. They called me last week and told me they had the final part for my car in - the strip that goes along under the door. This one will replace the one that was ruined by the black goo leaking out from inside the door. But I got there and they well full o' repairs today, so they couldn't do it.

Maybe in another two weeks.

then I came home and - after a short trip to Big Life Toys to see if they had anything fun and new that I had to have - I came back to the house.

Did I do my Kate Bush dance around the house while listening to Kate Bush? I'm not telling you. Maybe. Maybe not. That Wuthering Heights is a really good song, though.

You know what else I've had stuck in my head lately? Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Fucking Elton John, for God's sake. And then it was Air's theme song from The Virgin Suicides. But I managed to download 'em both this weekend.

Speaking of tunes, I made a new tape to run to last night. What's that? You want to know what songs are on it? Okay!

  1. Christina Aguilera et al, - Lady Marmalade
See, you gotta start a tape like this pretty strong or else you'll end up stopping somewhere for a beer when you should be running. What's stronger than a TRL-ready cast of hot young things singing a cover of a well-worn disco song? Rock.
  2. Andy Taylor - Take It Easy
And then to follow that with some of the most exciting doofus-rock ever recorded? Audacious. No one but me would dare.
  3. Better Than Ezra - This Time of Year
And then step down a notch, a la Cusack in High Fidelity. But still a rockin' tune.
  4. Blink 182 - Dancing WIth Myself
A snotty punk cover of a song that was already snotty and punk to begin with. A winner.
  5. Moby - Southside
And not the Stefani version either, buddy.
  6. '68 Comeback - High School Confidential
A bit of a gamble. Still a cover, though, and covers are a safe choice for running.
  7. BeeGees - Jive Talkin'
We had this 45 in my fourth grade classroom. We loved to have recess inside (on rainy days, like) 'cause we'd get to listen to it.
  8. Alice Deejay - Back In My Life
From early disco to the twenty-first century stuff. It's all about juxtaposition.
  9. Nerf Herder - Pantera Fans In Love
See? More snotty punk sandwiched between dance music. It works, dammit!
  10. Alicia Bridges - I Love the Nightlife
    I got to boogie.
  11. Elvis Costello - The Other Side of Summer
    This tune is so great.
  12. Full Frontal - You Think You're a Man
An old Divine song, no less. Not for your mom to listen to.
  13. Macy Gray - I Try
Starting the second side cool but catchy. Go Macy.
  14. Blur - Girls and Boys
Whoo! It's 1994! Check out this video! Those Europeans are crazy!
  15. Kiss - Strutter
  16. Kiss - Do You Love Me?
Ah, you weren't expecting the double-shot of classic rock, were you? And these two are right next to each other on Double Platinum - all I had to do was drop the needle.
  17. Ace of Base - Cruel Summer
Good original. Good cover. Good remix. I cannot underestimate the importance of Bananarama to my sexual development. Thank you, girls.
  18. John Wesley Harding - I'm Wrong About Everything
A standard goon tune with a sing-along chorus. Good for running.
  19. Moulin Rouge Soundtrack - Hindi Sad Diamonds
I think the Chamma Chamma business at the beginning is insanely catchy.
  20. David Bowie - Suffragette City
    Wham. Bam. Thank you, ma'am.
  21. Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights
Another really good song, that I think goes well with the previous two. I can see me singing "It's me! Your Cathy!" on the treadmill later on this week. That's going to go over well.
  22. Georgia Satellites - Almost Saturday Night / Rockin' All Over The World
What? Georgia Satellites? From the excellent Rubaiyat collection.
  23. Darude - Sandstorm
  24. Matt Darey - Beautiful
And two pre-mixed slabs of Ibiza dance music to close it out. I'm a genius.

Also this afternoon I watched Passions. Everyone, I must admit: I've been wrong to mock this show. It's the greatest soap opera ever.

Within twenty minutes of the start of the show (which I have never watched before, remember) I knew everything that had ever happened. The first fifteen minutes was pure exposition; I guess NBC considers the average Passions viewer to be a major retard.

I wrote down some of my favorite lines from today's episode. Keep in mind these events are being watched over by a witch and her pet midget kid, and that the town of Harmony has been overrun by an evil fog:

  • "Now I can find out who ruined my tennis career!"
  • "What I wouldn't give to be in the sack with that hunk."
  • "He's done some dastardly things."
  • "Timmy scared!"
  • "That fiendish fog is playing tricks on everyone!"
  • "Just get your hands off my pookie!"
  • "I want you dead and I'm going to kill you!"
  • "You rushed in here and attacked me like a crazed pitbull, you freaking madman!"

If only I knew how to program the VCR I could watch this every day.
