cyberpunk freaks While sitting at the laundromat, I read some more of Snow Crash to pass the time and I have to admit that my impression of the book has changed slightly. Having safely put a hundred pages behind me, I have come to accept the fact that the book is meant to be funny, but it isn't to me. Since I think that the whole cyberpunk genre in general is borderline silly, a satirical novel on said topic seems like overkill to me. All of the details that Stephenson relentlessly piles on to create a vibe of intense energy make the book even more cartoon like for me than anything else. However, despite my feelings about the book, I am determined to finish it just so that I can say that I read it. On a completely unrelated note, I find the television show Freaks and Geeks to be very funny. While I can't relate to anything cyberpunk, I can relate to the world of feathered hair and big combs. As much as I liked The Wonder Years, it wasn't the era that I grew up in and remember, so it always seemed a little distant to me. Freaks and Geeks, however, is almost the exact time that the junior high years of my life happened and they augment that feeling of nostalgia with some amazing attention to detail. For example when the girls at the lunch table brought out a Texas Instruments calculator I had to laugh, because I had the exact same one years ago.
