Michelangelo sibyl from the Sistine Chapel

an electric hum

Once I got a few hours of sleep in for the day, I had a pretty productive Sunday. Most of it was spent visiting with my parents and siblings for the first time in probably a month. While I was there I did some laundry and had my dad fix my director's chair. He not only fixed the chair, but told me what was wrong with the doorbell at my house and why it keeps humming. So hopefully I'll have that fixed as well this week.

The last time that I had been there I had a feeling that my parents were not overly happy about my sister Hope getting engaged, but I never said anything. Now, however, my mom and Hope were openly debating the issue while I was there. The two bigest concerns that my parents have are Hope's young age and the limited amount of time that she has known her future husband. She is only twenty years old and has known her future husband for less than a year.

I can see and agree with what my parents said, but I am not about to get involved. I really don't think that it is my place to say anything nor do I want to say anything.

The other major topic of discussion while I was there was eye surgery or what they refer to as lasik. The local news did a small piece on the procedure last week and my eyes hurt just watching it on television. Something about them talking about making a flap on the surface of the eye really made me wince. What makes the operation even more frightening to me is that the patient is awake and alert when everything is being done. I could not imagine someone talking to me at they cut a circle into the surface of my eye and then bombarded it with a laser.

The only reason that I mention this operation is that my dad is considering it. For years he has prided himself on his perfect vision, but that changed a year or two ago. Now he owns a pair of what he calls reading glasses and I guess that they must bother him more than I thought.

It seems that my mom is trying to convince my dad not to have it done, but he doesn't believe her when she describes the process since he didn't see it on the news. So my account of the operation was meant to lend support to her argument. We will see what he decides to do or if this is merely a passing thought.

Of course my vision isn't perfect either, but I'm not sure if I would consider this operation high on my list of options. I am not overly fond of wearing glasses, but I don't wear them all of the time either. I mainly use them for driving at night, otherwise I can do everything else just fine without them.

As expected, now that we actually have snow here in Milwaukee and everything looks pretty again, the temperature is supposed to shoot well above the freezing mark for most of the week. There might even be some rain to make winter seem like even more of a memory.
