the national holiday

Cold overcast sky. An empty parking lot at work when I left this morning. Stopped for some gas so that I didn't have to do it later in the day. A line of cars waiting for a car wash. Small things let me know that something was different about today.

...

After a three hour power nap between nine and noon, I showered and hit the road. I had done the exact same road trip for my grandparents fiftieth wedding anniversary a month or so ago.

Strange thoughts went through my mind as I drove past the powdered sugar covered countryside. I kept wondering what the land looked like a hundred years ago. I wanted to know what the people were doing then and why. The farms may or may not have been there and suddenly I wanted to know which one was true.

Chicane, U2 and James provided the soundtrack as I made my way north of the city.
