japanese wagner opera Sunday wasn't as productive as I had hoped that it would be and the day slowly slipped away from me. With the afternoon gloom of a warm winter, staying awake was even harder for me to do than it usually is on a Sunday. I did wake in time to see The X-Files, but slipped back into an awkward sleep on the couch. By awkward I mean that I woke up every couple of hours only to roll back over and sleep some more. Maybe I wouldn't mind these two hour sleep cycles if I had some decent dreams along the way or was refreshed when I woke, but that isn't what happens. More often than not I just wake extremely confused wondering what to do next. When I was awake later in the day, I did manage to put more tinsel on the Christmas tree and watch The Harlock Saga. ... There was no sun this morning, nor do I expect to see much of the sun for most of the week. Instead of having cold cloudless winter skies we have been having dreary fog filled days that seem more like September than December weather. ... I needed to get copies of a few movies for my final paper and made my way to the video store. It was the first time in months that I had set foot inside a video store and I was amazed at all of the movies that I had missed in the past few months. There was Sunshine with Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz. There was Requiem for a Dream with Jennifer Connelly. There was Shadow of the Vampire with John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe. All of these movies came out months ago and have been on my must see list and I was so close to seeing them. I would pick up the box, read a little and think to myself that I had enough time for just one movie before I worked on the paper. Then I thought again and put the box back down on the shelf. in the end my will power was strong enough and I walked away with just the movies that I needed for my paper and nothing else. I told myself that I'll have plenty of time to watch movies after I hand in my paper on Thursday. For now all that I'll get to see will be To Kill A Mockingbird, Ethan Frome and Smoke Signals. I need to eat and breathe those three films and the corresponding novels until the paper is done. Naturally this final paper has to be the longest one of the semester and is taking more effort than any of the previous ones. At first I was dedicated, making notes and adding paragraphs to the paper, but then I faltered. I was hungry, turned on the television and was lost. A wet and weary Kate Winslet was on the screen wading through the cold water of the Atlantic Ocean filling the Titanic and I had to watch. The coming of age of Jem and Scout just couldn't compare.
