no one around

Looking back through the journal, I can see that a year ago I was convinced that J Crew Girl was the one for me. Sigh. Now I know better. Nothing ever did come of our talks. Actually getting her to talk was always a struggle. Talking with Miss Zealot was so much easier. All of that is in the past now.

Putting aside the social aspect of school for a moment, I know that this semester is going to be different. Rather than having a literature discussion class with papers due every other week, this one is strictly lecture exam oriented which will give me much more free time than I have had in the past.

For me reading a standard textbook is so much easier than reading literature. There are no secondary and or hidden meanings. Almost everything in the book is meant to be straight forward and hopefully clearly explained. There are no character motivations. There are no literary allusions. There are no clever uses of language. A textbook presents what it hopes is readily understandable information which I can usually digest with one quick read.

When I went to the bookstore this morning, it was a complete contrast to yesterday. I picked up my book and paid for it in five minutes. Everyone else must have been in class this time.

When I got to work I noticed that Ann was wearing a turtleneck sweater and in my best junior high sing song voice I started to say over and over:

Ann has a hickie. Ann has a hickie. Ann has a hickie.

That one simple phrase was enough to get most of the people standing in the immediate area talking. I quickly learned that Ann had made a bet that she wouldn't fall in love and a hickie was something that would certainly make her lose. She however said that she wore it because all of her other clothes needed to be washed.

I thought that it was a fun way to start out the night at work.
