counting the days

Rain that started Saturday night was still coming down this morning when I got home from work. This development in the weather meant that I didn't get back out on the trail as I had planned. There was a small window of time after I woke up in the afternoon, but I needed that time to do some things before I went to visit my mom for Mother's Day.

I am sure that the trail will still be there on Monday.

Something in the news caught my attention. Former president Carter is in Cuba talking with Castro. Damn. I never thought that that would happen. As I've said in the past I am almost completely apolitical, but even I know that his being there is a major event. I mean the man has made so many advances in foreign relations that I have to wonder if this changes the opinions of those that hated him when he was in office. Then again the American public has a very short term memory.

I remember reading somewhere that when Clinton was in office he sought foreign policy advice from Nixon a number of times. Naturally the American public would have been horrified to learn that that was happening. I could be wrong, but I think that the article was in The New Yorker.

I guess the primary reason that I ignore politics without any sense of guilt is that I find most people in politics suspect of ulterior motives. Yes, I can hear the arguments already. If you aren't involved in the process then you can't make it better. Sigh. Whatever. I think that that approach to life is a losing battle and I am still working on my dream of being an expatriate. Actually I have a plan that I am going to set in motion this July. I have to send an email or two first, but I think that this is going to work and change my life completely.

Streaming radio still works for me. Here is the sampling of what I heard in a forty-five minute period:

Starlight Mints - Cracker Jack
Glen Philips - Train Wreck (seeing him in concert was a highlight from last year)
Olivia Tremor Control - Grass Canvas
Pixies - La La Love You (frank black where have you gone)
Velocity Girl - Media Core (fun stuff my friends)
Magnetic Fields - When You
Elliot Smith - Easy Way Out (thank you good will hunting)
Sebadoh - Cuban
Apples In Stereo - Questions and Answer
Tortoise - A Simple Way To Go Faster Than
Lois - Strumpet
Sonic Youth - Against Fascism
Beulah - I Love John, She Loves Paul
Guided By Voices - (I Wanna Be A) Dumbcharger

The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood is slightly confusing with the continual shift amongst three narrators, but it is starting to grow on me.

...

The X-Files slipped in one more funny episode before the series finale. I guess that that makes sense.
