some comic books One of the last things that I did on Sunday night was call my friend Kris on the East Coast. While we were talking the conversation turned to movies and The Big Lebowski was mentioned. Both of us love the movie and after talking about it that night, I decided that I needed to see it again. Watching it for the first time in months if not years was the best part of yesterday for me. After getting caught in traffic at various parts of the city I needed to do something to help me unwind. Seeing John Turturro as Jesus the Hispanic bowler made me forget any lingering road rage. That purple jumpsuit of his is priceless and has to be one of the shining moments of the film. Of course John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi and Jeff Bridges also have their moments. World War II must still be on my mind, because the other movie that I brought home with me yesterday was Das Boot. ... If George Lucas ever met my niece, he'd be a happy man. As far as I know she has yet to see any of the other films beside Phantom Menace, but she truly loves Star Wars and can't stop talking about it. I honestly had no idea that one movie could have such an impact on a little girl This morning while I was trying to fix the cd rom drive on my parents computer she showed me the latest action figures that she has gotten. In her hand still attached to the box were Luke and Leia. After I had helped her free them from said box, she told me that Leia and Amidala were fighting over Luke. I tried to tactfully explain that Amidala was Luke's mom, but I don't think that she was listening to me. If I had been more awake and had the time I might have stayed to watch Episode IV with her. She's seen Chewbacca on the cover to the videotape, but that isn't the same as hearing him. ... Sleeping with the windows open is a sign that autumn is closer than I might imagine. Oh, I suppose that it can be done in the summer, but more often than not the humidity starts to bother me. Today that didn't happen. All but one window is my place was open and I slept for nearly six hours without waking up once. Even though September has yet to start, we've had a few days where there is a thirty degree difference in temperature between the day and the night. ... In the latest issue of Lucifer, Mike Carey has started a new story arc and the man continues to deliver the best writing in comics today. He gives us mythology mixed with political intrigue and it works so well that I can't think of a better way to describe it. In this latest arc we've been taken back to hell where Lucifer has been challenged to a duel by the angel Amenadiel. While that is happening Mazikeen is hunting down Susano to get the feathers that he stole from Lucifer. On the Marvel side of the comic book market, Geoff Johns has made his debut in The Avengers and he seems to be off to a good start. The characterization is sound and I can feel the story slowly starting to build. Obviously the feel of this title is far different than Lucifer, but I grew up reading the Avengers so the sentiment value blinds me to some of the more outlandish elements that most people find hard to ignore.
