king of chu

Lately I've been all over the cultural map in my pop culture explorations. In my musical taste there has been a very strong Canadian leaning with Blue Rodeo and Sarah McLachlan. This has been matched with listening to Margaret Atwood's The Blind Assassin on cassette as I make my way to and from school. The story takes place in Canada and makes frequent mention on that fact.

Now Canada may not be as exotic as say Asia, but I doubt that many Canadians want to be Americans and I know this from personal experience. When I was in Australia last summer, they couldn't tell if my sister and I were Americans or Canadians. To lessen offense they would generally identify us as Canadians since Americans usually don't care if they are mistaken for Canadians, but Canadians are often offended if someone thinks that they are Americans.

Added to my Canadian mix have been films in Spain and China. Then as a final seasoning there are discussions in class about pidgin languages in Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. Of course none of this bothers me and quite honestly I like it.
