people on ice

The first thing that she said when she walked into the room was that she was extremely grumpy and upon hearing that I was determined to make her smile before she went home. Within an hour I succeeded even though I never got a direct answer as to why she was so upset in the first place. What she told me was that an argument had taken place between her and her fiance. The subject and or cause of the argument was never mentioned to me. I didn't pry.

Due to another person being on vacation, I got to spend my first night back with her and I can't think of a better way to start my week at work. It was slow and I was tired, but that didn't stop me from visiting with her. There was talk of Christmas and the lack of a gift from a certain someone. Then later towards the end of the day the topic turned to lighter matters such as her fondness for bulldogs and their ugly but cute faces. She never called them ugly, she always called them precious, which is very her. She was still looking at them online when I left for the day.

Once I was home, sleep came to me without even trying. Over seven hours went by under a pile of blankets. The dreary day hadn't given me any reason to stay awake and made my bed that much more desirable.

When I woke, leaning against my front door was a package. Inside the package were some books that I had ordered with my Christmas money. Sleeping seven hours and then finding some great reading material waiting for me made the day even better.

Something obvious occurred to me today. Reading something other than textbooks is fun. Instead of trying to fully absorb what is being said, I can just read and stay on the surface. What I mean to say is that Ubik is a good read and I was a little too harsh on it yesterday.
