that cool factor With the upcoming comic book films this summer, Peter David on his site asked his readers what in their opinion was the best superhero film they had ever seen. From looking at the responses posted so far, most people including Peter chose Superman, even though the time travel ending makes most people wince. Batman, Daredevil, Spiderman and a few other obvious choices were mentioned, but generally speaking the first of the Superman films came out on top. They cited the feeling of awe and the emotional connection that people made with what Christopher Reeve gave to young Kal-el as to why it meant so much to them. I can see their point, but for me the best superhero film has to be Unbreakable and a few others posting on the site agreed. Unbreakable had everything that a proper comic book film needs to be memorable if not perfect. There was the reluctant hero full of doubt who as he comes to grip with who is he discovers that there is someone else just like him but different in terms of moral structure. His opposite is willing to act without any hesitation whatsoever to get what he sees he deserves from life. From that point the struggle starts and continues until the end of the story which may last a lifetime. Now maybe some people found the film to be odd if not dull, but for me the crux of the film was about self discovery and what a person should do in life. What more a person could ask from a film is beyond me. Then again people wants escapism and not a lesson when they sit in the theater. Besides none of them wore hip clothing or did any cool kick ass moves. ... Dar Williams won me over tonight. I only discovered her music a few months ago, but seeing her perform live made me a believer. Oh, she may not have what the media call mass appeal, but I've always had a soft spot for that folk sound and she offers that up just the way that I like it. Plus the Pabst theater was the perfect venue for her kind of music. It was warm and friendly with plenty of time to hold hands with a certain someone. |
