eerie time capsule When I walked through the door it felt very strange, because there was no there to greet me even though I hadn't been expecting anyone. As far back as twenty years ago this had always been a warm welcoming place. Yesterday it was cold and abandoned. It was the first time I had been to my grandma's place since she had her stroke and that was over a year ago. My great aunt had left the door open for me and I carried my groceries inside. It was cooler in the house than it was outside. It made sense. Why should the heat be turned all the way up when no one was living there anymore? Walking around the house made me feel sad, because to me the house felt neglected if not completely abandoned. It never looked that way when she was there. Obviously the furniture looked the same as did the pictures on the walls, but no one bothered to save the plants. A nice lush spider plant in her bedroom was brown and shriveled. No amount of watering could save it now. All of the calendars in the house showed July of last year and most of the magazines were even older. I guess that there really wasn't any great need to throw them out, but they added to the sadness of the place. Time had stopped there and it didn't make me feel any better. Things started to feel better once I turned up the heat and sun came out. Soon I made my way down to the lake as I always do when I go there. Less than fifty feet from shore were the resident pair of loons slowly making their way across the water. I don't know much about them except that there is usually just one pair per lake unless the lake is extremely large. As for the lake itself, the water was up pretty high considering that there wasn't that much snow this past winter. |
