unearthing siberian gold Lately people have been complaining about the weather here, but that didn't stop me from grilling this afternoon. Actually the past three days have been rather nice with the rain holding off until today. Besides if it rains on the weekend, I could care less because I'll be at work anyway. Now that I think about it some more, most of the complaints that I've heard weren't about the rain, but the cool temperatures. Although the calendar says June, it still feels like the beginning of May. Personally I don't mind and I am sure that the blistering heat will get here soon enough and then people will start to complain about that instead, because the weather is always an easy target for venting frustration. ... Since I can't go anywhere at the moment, I started reading a new travel book. Leaving behind the world of faerie as created by Neil, I've stepped into the just as odd yet very real world of Chile as described by Sara Wheeler in her book Travels in a Thin Country. I've never been there, but Chile does make my top five list of places that I want to see and Sara has only added to my desire. Since I'm only fifty some pages into the book, I can't say too much about it yet, but it does move along at a smooth pace that I enjoy in a book. Her plan of going from the northern end of the country to the south makes sense and she doesn't seem to be strapped for time. It makes me very envious even with some of the frustration that she has experienced so far. As with most people whenever Chile was mentioned I used to think of Pinochet and very little else. An episode of Globe Trekker and Sara have changed that image to something much more positive. Where else can I see the Andes, geoglyphs and glaciers in one country? |
