sarcastic mister know it all Once again Wisconsin is making bad press across the nation. According to the latest reports, we have monkey pox in the state. Yes, you heard me. We have monkey pox. Sigh. Who thinks up these names? Thankfully the disease isn't all that serious, but what I want to know is why would anyone want to own a prairie dog anyway? They are rodents. Are they really that affectionate? I doubt it. Do the owners let them burrow under their homes? Do they cut holes in the floor for them? Can't they be happy with a cat or dog? How about a fish? I guess that I have always fond the concept of having a pet to be a little arrogant if not unnatural. The skewed reasoning must be that since I am human I therefore have the right to take other perceived lesser creatures out of their natural environment and basically change their entire lives. Okay, that may have been harsh, but I don't see other creatures on this planet besides people having pets. Cats and dogs would be the exception of pets being strange since humanity domesticated them thousands of years ago, but owning an exotic pet still bothers me. Does that make the person feel more hip? Does owning a pet python define you as a person? Does the owner of a tarantula feel a special warmth when their pet crawls up their arm? Do they snuggle with said pet? ... On the weather they keep saying that it feels like April instead of June, but that didn't stop me from grilling out this morning. What was annoying to me was the strong north wind that made it a challenge to light the fire. Once I had the food done and had eaten I started my search for some new living room furniture. My recent refinancing of my mortgage means that I am going to stay where I am for another two years so I might as well make the place look as nice as possible. I had a list of stores where I wanted to look, but I think I found what I want at the very first store. The couch and chair that caught my eye were almost at the very front of the store and as soon as I saw them, I was fairly certain that I was going to buy them. Both the color and the shape of the pieces were what I wanted. Besides the couch and chair I was also shopping for a new entertainment center. I prefer to have the television and all of the other electronic components that go with it to be hidden from view and I found one that met my needs at the second store that I visited. Personally I think that I was very successful in my search and now all that I have to do is decide if that is what I really want to do with my money for the rest of the year. ... On the pop culture front, I am starting to like what Mark Waid is doing with the Fantastic Four. The idea of Victor Von Doom using the daughter of Reed and Sue as his magical familiar is very clever and disturbing at the same time. Of course this is exactly what Waid is trying to achieve with the story that he has called Unthinkable. My only objection to the current run would be the art. Mike Wieringo may have a strong following with others in the comic book world, but he does little for me. His panels are cluttered and something about the way that he draws people bothers me. I wish that I could be more specific about what I dislike about his style, but I can't pin it down to one thing. The irony is that when I stopped reading the book over a year ago, I left because I only liked the art on the book and not the writing. Now the two are reversed and I am going to stick with the book because the story is something fresh and I can look past the art for a time. |
