those sea legs

Last night I saw Pirates of the Caribbean and as a comedy it had a few good moments, but I don't think that that was the sole intention of the filmmakers. Maybe they thought there was some life left in a dead genre and some money to be made at the same time. I myself doubt that the movie will generate that much interest or cause a revival. Whatever they were hoping to do, every time that Depp was on the screen I had to laugh. The New Yorker said that he sashayed around and I completely agree. As to how no one could have noticed what he was doing when they were filming is beyond me.

Man versus nature is not a new conflict, but this week I was caught in a minor battle of my own. Let me explain.

Some of the local birds think that the three inch space above my air conditioner unit makes an ideal spot to build a nest and I can see their reasoning. The spot is sheltered from the elements, high off of the ground and a short flight from a tree in my front yard. However, the flight path to get to said nest goes over my grill and in my humble opinion avian fecal matter does not add flavor to grilled food.

I had been away for three days and when I returned my neighbor mentioned that they thought the birds had built a nest and I agreed when I saw them flying back and forth onto my deck. So with broom in hand I slowed dislodged an almost fully formed nest from the above mentioned spot hoping that no eggs would come tumbling down on me or the ground. Thankfully nothing was inside of the nest to fall out.

Removing the nest did not stop the birds from coming back and wondering what had happened to all of their hard work. However, when they started again the next day I was there to quickly discourage them again and I seem to be winning. Plus when I lounge around on the deck for hours, my presence there is enough to keep them away or at the very least in the trees.
