morningstar monolith vortex Today Bill Willingham is generating all sorts of praise for his writing on the Vertigo book Fables, but fifteen years ago he was better known for his work on the Comico published title The Elementals. I was collecting at the time and I was vaguely aware of the book, but never read an issue. I did sample some of the other Comico offerings such as Grendel and Robotech, but not The Elementals. Then somewhere down the line I bought about a dozen issues or so in an online auction, but didn't get around to reading them until today. The idea of four people having powers corresponding to earth, air, water and fire is not new to the world of comic books with the Fantastic Four being the most famous example, but Willingham made characters that were just as interesting if not more human than those famous four. |
