waiting for snow

The Gangs of New York kept me entertained this morning. I'm not sure why I didn't see it when it was in the theaters, but the fight scenes probably would have been something else on the big screen. From most of the reviews that I had read, I knew ahead of time that it wasn't historically accurate, but I still wanted to see it. Daniel Day Lewis has yet to disappoint me and it didn't happen in this film.

Milwaukee may not be as old of a city as New York, but it was growing already during the same period as the events in the film. Unlike the Five Points, which has been removed completely from the modern day version, there are still some parts of Milwaukee where one can see streets lined with brick instead of asphalt.

...

Two weeks into the year, winter keeps fluctuating between days of gray with hints of snow and days of sun crossing an intensely blue sky. Today is one of the former and I wish that it was one of the latter. Oh, I don't mind the snow, but the amount that drifted down from time to time today didn't make up for the gloom.

The less than inviting weather made it easy to stay inside and read. Fresh from the mail this morning was my monthly shipment of comic books and I was more than happy to sit under a blanket and read as many as possible. Each time I get a box I tell myself that I need to ration the books so that they will last through the month, but never seems to happen. Twelve books were read before I got up to get something to drink.

Leaving the printed world behind, I now have a new favorite band or at least one who has caught my interest. Death Cab for Cutie and their latest disc Transatlanticism has been set to repeat on my computer. The song Passenger Seat is perfect lying in bed with closed eyes music. Nothing else needs to exist at that moment.
