miguel not peter

Peter David hasn't been impressing me with his current work in the field, be it Fallen Angel for DC or Captain Marvel for Marvel Comics, but ten years ago his writing on Spider-Man 2099 was perfect storytelling. A small stack of those books has been my source of reading material for the day and I am wondering why I didn't read them all in one sitting when I originally bought them online.

Even though I've been collecting for years, Spider-Man as a character has never really appealed to me that much. In fact it wasn't until Todd McFarlane started on the book over a decade ago that I gave it any real attention. None of the stories were that interesting, but Todd with his knotted webbing appealed to me at the time. Now I can't stand anything that McFarlane does in comics, but his run did get me to buy about a year or so worth of the title.

That year run gave me a brief taste of most of Spider-Man's enemies, his supporting cast and also made me realize why I never cared for the character. Quite simply Spider-Man is an icon so nothing can change. Peter can never shake off the camp from the 1960's era such as J. Jonah Jameson and some of the awful villains from that same time period. For me there was too much baggage and not enough growth.

Spider-Man 2099, however, is free of those constraints and takes what is good in Amazing Spider-Man and makes it so much better.
