that scottish play

Early this morning, I got an email from my sister in Baghdad. All is quiet where she is located and hopefully it stays that way.

...

Anyone who knows me knows that I like Shakespeare and today I watched a modern film interpretation that I loved. Scotland, PA made the tragedy of Macbeth funny. Now when I say funny, I don't mean slapstick funny, but more of a satirical dark humor kind of funny.

Instead of royalty in Scotland we get working class America in the 1970's and it works for me. Not only do I love the change of location, but I also love the cast. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have always seemed very human to in terms of characterization, but seeing them in American clothing makes them even more real to me.

Most of the killing and death from the play was eliminated or made less gruesome in the movie, which was fine with me. Polanski already made a bloody version of Macbeth that no one else has equaled.

Later in March I'll be seeing a stage version of The Tempest for the very first time.
