swamp thing negation

DC decided to start a new Swamp Thing book and I managed to pick up the first copy yesterday after class. The last time that they tried to do something new with the Swamp Thing myth, they made his daughter Tefe the focus of the book with her father as a supporting character. Approaching a book from a new point of view isn't new, but it must not have been the way to go, because if I remember correctly, the book lasted a year before it was cancelled. My guess is that there wasn't enough reader interest to keep it going, but from the issue or two that I read it didn't seem that awful. Personally I think that there are far worse books on the stands today that have no fear of cancellation.

Abby and Tefe are still in this new book, but Swamp Thing himself is the driving force behind the book this time around and that makes sense to me. However, the current version of the Swamp Thing is not what Alan Moore brought to life two decades ago. No, the earth elemental that exists now has no human conscience to temper its behavior. The mind of Alec Holland has been removed from it and John Constantine is determined to put it back where it belongs. I see that as a great start to a new series that hopefully will last longer than a year.

CrossGen as a company is still alive and I finally got around to sampling what is now their flagship book, Negation. The book has been around for two years, but a space war epic wasn't something that appealed to me. Now, however, after reading just three issues, I can see that the hype was right this time. Tony Bedard writes a great story and I may have to add the title to my monthly reading list.
