nora and torvald

Now maybe I am being too critical, but I have not been impressed by this season at the Milwaukee Rep and tonight was no exception.

I had never seen a production of Ibsen's A Doll's House so I came to the play with a fresh perspective. The story was unknown to me and I had no expectations whatsoever. Under those circumstances the players should have had an advantage, but they did not endear me at all.

For me I could feel that the play was dated and any controversy that it may have had when it first was written was long gone. In fact it almost felt like camp to me instead of being a serious issue. I didn't care for Nora and Torvald felt like a caricature more than anything else.

Putting aside the story, I detested the stage lighting. For some reason that is beyond me, the lighting dramatically changed to match the mood of Nora. It was overwrought if not slightly condescending. Shouldn't the acting be allowed to carry the emotion of the play?
