forty thousand miles

I made the right decision to swim at my parents place yesterday rather than going there today as I had originally planned to do when I first got the idea on Monday. Not only did it cool down a considerable amount, but the rain from last month decided to make a return. From my perspective it was definitely a day to stay inside rather than venture out and that's what I did.

Staying inside for most of the day didn't bother me at all, because my monthly shipment from Mile High Comics came in the mail today. That small stack of books was enough to keep me busy when I was trying to clean my place. Here are some of the highlights of what I read.

  • In Lucifer, Mike Carey revealed how the children of Lilith had a role in building the Silver City.
  • Over in Fables, Carey had the army of The Adversary attacking Fabletown.
  • Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning wrote their final issue of The Legion.
  • Yorick shot someone in The Last Man and didn't tell his two companions.
  • Gail Simone continues to gain my respect with her writing on Birds of Prey.
  • Andy Diggle truly understands Abby and Tefe in Swamp Thing.
  • Wally West and Dick Grayson talked about growing up together in The Flash.
  • Kyle and Jen went their separate ways in Green Lantern.

Of those eight books, I think that one that impressed me the most would have to be Lucifer. The political maneuvering of the angels against the children of Lilith was amazing.

...

Even though President Reagan died last week, I haven't really paid that much attention to the ceremonies until this afternoon. Obviously I understand the historical importance of the event, but I was never that big of a believer in the man. Plus I think that people are getting caught up in the emotion of the moment and are trying to lionize him. The man did have faults, but those are being overlooked by the faithful.

To be fair, I sat for two hours in front of my television and watched as the caisson made its way to the Capitol and must confess that it was an emotional event. I felt more for Nancy than anyone else. Reagan has been gone for the last ten years, but she was still there for him and that takes some courage. Anyone can utter a sentence using the phrase "evil empire" in it.
