depression era comedy

After seeing a performance of the Hart and Kaufman play You Can't Take It With You, I am convinced that depression era comedy isn't for me, because I didn't laugh once during the show. My best guess for this reaction is that I'm much too distant from the mindset of that time to appreciate the humor. I can understand that the characters were happy living their lives as they saw fit, but I didn't get much else out of the play. Plus as I watched the Sycamore family go about their daily routine, I couldn't help but think of The Munsters, because the number of parallels between the two families was so obvious to me. Besides the married couple and eccentric grandpa all living under the same roof involved in odd hobbies, there was a perfectly ordinary daughter who was ashamed of her family despite the fact that she loved them. Yes, I know that the normal person in the Munsters wasn't the daughter of the couple, but was their niece, but that doesn't change the overall feel of the eccentric family and how the world perceives them.
