from the northwest At eight thirty this morning, the doorbell rang. Standing on the other side of the door was someone from the post office with a package for me. She said that for the next two weeks they would be making deliveries on Sunday and I said that that was fine with me. Inside the package were almost three dozen comic books that I had won in an online auction. It was a mix of Captain Atom, Suicide Squad and The Legion of Super Heroes. Once I got some sleep they would provide some good reading material. ... Against my better judgment I had Netflix send me the movie Spider-Man 2 and I was not impressed by what I saw. Putting aside any reference to the comic book lore that inspired the movie, I still have to say that it was a bad movie. The first hour moved so slow that it put me to sleep and did not make me want to see the end. None of the characters interested me and I had to wonder why Spider-Man kept taking off his mask at every chance that he got. There were only three things in the movie that I liked. The first would be Elizabeth Banks as Betty Brant. She was perfect in her role and had far more charm on the screen than Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane, which has always been a mistake in my eye. In fact as good as Elizabeth Banks looked as Betty, I think that I would have been even happier to see her as Mary Jane. Despite having maybe two minutes of screen time, I was completely smitten with her. The second thing that was good in the movie were the tentacles of Doctor Octopus and how impressive they looked. The way that they moved and sounded was even better than I had imagined. A good deal of thought and care was clearly put into their design and how they would appear on the screen. The way that they looked made me forget the sad appearance of the Green Goblin from the first movie. Finally I was very happy to see that they had Spider-Man adopting some of the classic poses that I know so well. There were times that it felt as though I were looking at a panel from one of the books. Too bad the story was so weak and uninteresting that it made these dynamic visuals a waste of time. |
