jessica and shylock Years ago in high school I first read the Shakespeare play The Merchant of Venice and generally speaking liked it. Now after having seen a BBC production today, I've come to realize that I may not have liked it as much I thought that I did, because there were parts of the story that I had completely forgotten. Yes, I remembered the pound of flesh and do I not bleed lines, but the fact that Shylock had a daughter was no longer in my mental version of the play. ... After finally admitting to myself that I probably wouldn't have time to purchase and or decorate a Christmas tree this holiday season, I decided to at least do something with the three sets of white tree lights that were sitting in one of my closets. Instead of said lights adorning a tree, I thought that they would look good enough on my deck. So my first step in this project was to see where an outlet was located outside near my deck. I scanned the side of the house and couldn't see one anywhere. This absence of readily available electricity did not bode well for my holiday project. Then it dawned on me that I could probably use my outside lamp as an outlet. All that I would need is some kind of adapter. Once I had confirmed with my parents that said object did indeed exist, I ventured out to the stores to find one. I soon found out that said object is not carried by the local grocery store even though they stock light bulbs, extension cords and fuses. Nor did the nearest pharmacy have what I needed. Finally I went to the most logical of places for the adapter and found a small selection of them at the hardware store. Even though the end result was worth it, I'd have to say that stringing lights on a tree is much easier than trying to wind a ball of two hundred and fifty lights around a deck rail. Obviously as I moved along the ball got smaller and easier to maneuver, but in the beginning it was a struggle to keep everything from tangling together. As I was standing on my front lawn inspecting my light display, I saw black smoke crossing the sky. Clearly something very large was on fire off in the near distance. Soon a number of fire engines could be heard and then seen moving in that direction. It wasn't until I saw the evening news that I found out what had been burning. ... ABC was kind enough to air the two hour pilot of the series Lost tonight and I was more than happy to watch it. When the series debuted, I was still somewhat loyal to Smallville and only later switched allegiance. Now it is one of the three programs that I watch every week. The other two television staples would be The Amazing Race and ER. ... I still love that new diamond commercial where the man asks his wife to marry him again in some public location that feels European, but is still generic enough at the same time. What makes me smile isn't the setting or the premise of having family and friends hiding in the crowd, but the background music provided by The Delays. The song that they are using is called Long Time Coming. Now there isn't anything that offensive in the song, it just isn't that romantic either. More than likely what happened is some young advertising executive thought that it would be clever to promote a band that he or she likes in their pitch. |
