a mobile airship Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow made me smile, because I have always been a fan of those pulp tales from the 1940's and this clearly fit into that category. Where else can one see a lone agent and his girlfriend travel to exotic locales in an effort to fight a menace that wants to take over the world? Yes, I will admit that the computer generated backgrounds do take some adjustment on the part of the viewer and the awkward moving robots were unimpressive, but Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie look perfect in their roles. Of the three my favorite has to be Jolie as Franky. She truly seemed to be loving her character and so was I. Later in the film when I first spotted the mobile airship, I laughed to myself. Someone responsible for making the film must have read some issues of Captain America or Iron Man from the 1970's. In both series there was a government agency called S.H.I.E.L.D. run by a man who wore an eye patch. S.H.I.E.L.D. had bases located around the world, but they also had a flying base called the Helicarrier that roamed the skies of the world. So when I saw the mobile airship with Franky onboard it was clearly an homage to Nick Fury and the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier or at least that was the way that I saw it in my mind. The parallels were so blatant to me. Continuing the idea of the homage, Joe would be Captain America with the character of Polly standing in as his girlfriend Sharon Carter. Back in the 1970's the two of them often went on missions together bickering as they tried to stay alive. Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting have brought back some of that feeling to the lastest issues of Captain America and I hope that it continues. No one seems to care for pulp adventure stories anymore except for the people who make Athena Voltaire over at Modern Tales, which I love. The only difference is that the lead in their story is a woman and that makes it even more interesting.

On The Amazing Race they sent the teams from Ethiopia to Sri Lanka. Naturally this was weeks before the tsunami struck and they made note of that fact at the beginning of the episode. With only four teams left the pace of the program seems to have picked up and I have a fairly good idea of who is going to win. My guess is that Kris and Jon will walk away with the million dollars.

Far away in Kuwait my sister celebrated her twenty fifth birthday today. My parents were able to speak with her and found out that her friends gave her a party. So even in the desert she was able to have a nice time. I also found out that she will be leaving Kuwait next week and flying into New York. She'll spend another week there and finally leave for home here in Wisconsin.

Thanks to the free download of the week on iTunes, I have a new musical find. Ellie Lawson makes me think of a calmed down Alanis singing like Dido except that she sounds better than that description.
