can opener madness

I have never been overly skilled in the culinary arts, but I can manage to make a few simple meals for myself. However, even the most basic recipe quite often requires the use of some canned ingredient. That sounds reasonable enough, but when the can opener doesn't open the can, then there is a problem. Sigh.

My hand operated can opener that I have had for about eight years or so had started to act temperamental this year. More and more it wouldn't grip the can when I used it. Instead of cutting the lid it would just glide across the surface as my frustration grew. In the past I was able to get the can opener to slice the lid by changing the angle of my grip. That didn't happen last night when I was trying to make my spaghetti sauce. About the best that I could do was make perforations in the lid. Eventually I had the lid marked around the entire rim and reached for a butter knife to try and pry it off.

I felt like a moron hacking at the can so I could eat what was inside. Thankfully the tomato sauce and diced tomatoes were able to slip through the opening that I had made in both cans. My spaghetti sauce wasn't completely ruined, but I wasn't about to attempt the can of mushrooms or tomato paste. Slicing my hand open was not something that I wanted to do. I just wanted to eat.
