stage versus screen

Entertainment on the stage has been so disappointing lately for me, but the screen kind thankfully has not been. To put it another way, I have been much happier with what Netflix has been providing me than I have with the Milwaukee Rep efforts. This would be fine except that The Rep costs me far more than Netflix does on a one to one basis.

Fellini is known for his eccentric films where prostitutes and alcoholic excess are quite common fixtures, so I was surprised to discover that one of his early efforts, I Vitelloni, was so ordinary. It told the story of five thirty something men who have no real direction in life. The five of them simply wonder about the town doing very little. By the end of the film, one of them finally decides to leave the town to do something more with his life. If that hadn't happened, I'm not sure I would have liked it as much.

Moving from 1950's Italy, I watched these people who live in Nepal move their herds across the mountains in the movie Himalaya. The story itself was simple enough, but that wasn't the interesting part for me. What fascinated me was the fact that there are people that live in such a place. I can not imagine living at that altitude and having to do what they do to survive. It is so beyond my daily experience. Oh, I've been in different mountain ranges across the world, but I have a feeling that the Rocky Mountains and the Alps aren't quite the same as the Himalaya.
