top versus front

About a week ago or so with no real warning, my washing machine ceased to function properly. To be more precise, the agitator no longer moved the clothes to and fro as it should. Instead of any movement within the center of the basket, there was a high pitch mechanical squeal as the clothes soaked in detergent laded water. Thankfully the rinse and spin function still worked and I was able to get out most of the soap and water from my clothes before I removed them and put them into the dryer. This new development did not make me happy.

Last week I made a trip to the laundromat for the first time in years and since that is a stopgap solution to my problem, after work this morning I ventured out to the stores in search of a replacement machine. I had already done some pricing online and generally speaking knew that the smaller and more efficient front loading machines were more expensive than the traditional top loading version. In fact the price difference was nearly double. So even though the front loading machine had some good points, the cost was starting to keep me away.

I didn't pay for anything, but after visiting three stores this morning, I am eighty percent sure that I am going to get a top loading model. My next step is trying to figure out how much I need to raise my dryer so that I can get the lid open on the new taller top loading machine. My current top loader has a hinged lid and is eight inches shorter than any of the models that I saw at the stores or online. So in order to accommodate the new height, the shelf that hold my dryer needs to be moved upwards to provide some clearance for the lid.

Yes. This is not really the way that I prefer to spend my weekends, but it needed to be done.
