brisk ride east Pedaling east early this morning, I was immediately struck by how cold it felt. When I looked out my window before going outside, it didn't look cold, but seeing can be deceiving. Besides short of seeing frost on the ground or people in coats walking by, I really had no idea how warm or cold it was outside. Maybe I should I have taken a moment to look at the temperature online before I stepped out the door. Once I was outside what I did know for certain was that even after the sun had climbed above the horizon, I still felt chilly. Clearly an early morning in September is not the same as an early morning in August. Thankfully by the time that I turned around to go home, I was starting to feel warm. But by that time I had also passed a number of people on the trail clad in long sleeve sweatshirts that made my tee shirt and shorts feel that much more flimsy. With the start of September, the end of summer is truly here for most people with school beginning and vacations taken weeks ago. Suddenly the rest of the year becomes fixed with a new old routine. Scanning down a syllabus one can see a clear progression with each week bringing a new exam that much closer. Gone are the days where there were no deadlines. There was no structure. Now structure and demarcations are everywhere and it isn't just for people in school. For those not in school there is the steady beat of holidays starting with Halloween, which slides intoThanksgiving, and finally Christmas. Everything seems to be rushing towards the end of the year, as the days get shorter and the nights cooler. For me, however, the rest of the year is wide open in terms of milestones. I really have no idea what I want to get done before the year ends and that bothers me. |
