black forest tales

I found it hard to believe that the same man who in the past made such great movies as Brazil and 12 Monkeys was responsible for movie The Brothers Grimm. To be fair, I could see some trademark Terry Gilliam moments in the movie, but overall I found it to be very disappointing. Most of the effects were lackluster and the story was completely flat.

Without exaggeration the brothers were portrayed as bumbling charlatans, which would have been fine, but the farce element should have been taken further if that was the direction that the film wanted to go. Sadly that didn't happen. There were times when the movie tried to be more serious by mentioning over and over that the French had occupied Germany. The brothers it seems were alive when Germany was a sad place to live. What this had to do with the comedy parts is beyond me. The social commentary and the slapstick did not mix well.

At least Monica Bellucci as the Mirror Queen looked as lovely as ever. I am talking about her as the young queen and not the shriveled version. The desiccated version reminded me of Davros from Doctor Who fame and because of that resemblance I couldn't think of anything else but Daleks shouting exterminate as loudly as possible.
