reading john updike I think today we got our last snowfall of the season and what did fall to the ground will probably melt by Tuesday. None of this really bothers me. Overall we had a very mild winter so there isn't much reason to complain about the past few months. However, what does bother me is the upcoming two months of slop. Spring is my least favorite of the four seasons, because most of the time it means rain and not quite warm enough temperatures. When June gets here, then I'll start enjoying the weather. ... A recent issue of The New Yorker had an article about how happiness as a concept is a rather modern one. Before the benefits of modern technology people were too busy trying to survive than worry about whether or not they were happy. There wasn't enough free time to worry about one's state of mind. Trying to find food and shelter were much more important. I also read an excellent short story by John Updike. I have never read any of his novels, but I wonder if his themes of infidelity in New England hold up as well at a longer length. |
