an acquired taste

Yesterday for some unknown reason, I felt like listening to some music by a certain eccentric Icelandic woman named Bjork. So I grabbed the only album of hers that I own, Post, and took it with me to work last night. Strangely enough I liked it better than I had remembered. In fact, I listened to the whole album straight through not once but twice. Something old and forgotten had become fresh and unique for me.

Listening to Bjork sing, I came to realize that there was more to her than squeaks and grunts riding over a drum machine. Yes, for a long time that was my less than flattering opinion of her and is probably why I sold her debut album years ago. Now I have come to the conclusion that I may have made a mistake there and should purchase a new copy to replace the one that I abandoned to the used music store.

It was probably the opening track, Army of Me and its odd video, that made me want the album when it first came out a decade ago. Now I would have to say that my favorite song on the disc is Headphones with the song Enjoy coming in at a close second. Headphones as the title implies sounds awesome at that close range as ethereal pulsing weaves over echoes and multiple voices.

...

Allowing myself to be swayed by a number of positive reviews, I bought the first three issues of the comic book Nextwave in an online auction. Those books also accompanied me to work last night. They made for some satisfied reading leaving me wanting the next installment.

Perhaps I have given the impression that I was trying something completely new with this title, but that wouldn't be true. With my fondness for the words of Warren Ellis and the pencils of Stuart Immonen, the chance of me liking the book was very high.
