out from boneville Early this morning I reached the end of the first volume of Jeff Smith's epic Bone. He started the series back in the 1990's, but I never read a single issue until today. What kept me from reading the book was the drawing style. It reminded me too much of Casper and I wasn't sure that I would be able to get past that association. Now I know that I should not have let that stop me, because Smith has a way with dialogue and has crafted characters that are very human despite their cartoonish appearance. Having read the colored version of the beginning chapters of an epic, I am left wondering if I will appreciate the original black and white version as much. In some reviews that I have read, people say that the color disappointed them. They had their own vision of what the color should be instead of what they eventually saw on the printed page. I guess this is the same as people saying that a movie based on a book disappointed them. |
