kiss me kate

The Taming of the Shrew is probably one of the better known Shakespeare plays and that seemed to be true by looking at the audience in attendance tonight. It was the biggest crowd that I have ever seen at that theater. I'm not sure if this mass appeal comes from the nature of the play itself or the various film versions of it. Burton and Taylor did their time in the leading roles and then much more recently there was a stripped down retelling in the movie 10 Things I Hate About You.

This was the first time that I had ever seen it done onstage and I was very impressed by what I saw. They did the play as it would have been done in Shakespeare's time by having all of the female roles played by men. To answer the question that other people have asked, the actors who did this were not big burly men nor were they openly gay. Both of them were somewhat effeminate to make the role believable, but in my opinion the actor who played Bianca had a more feminine looking face than Kate.
