some november fog

All of the reviews that I read at Netflix said that I would really like the film Into Great Silence about the Grande Chartreuse monastery, but after sitting through the three hour documentary it somehow left me unimpressed. Oh, there is no denying that the place is beautiful and I can admire what the monks do, but I was unmoved by what I saw. Unlike others who commented on the film, I felt no spiritual experience had taken place by watching it. All that I can say is that maybe I was not in the right frame of mind to get the full impact.

Back in 1986 I was not reading Superman in any form even though there were three different titles at the time. I may have been vaguely aware that John Byrne was working on the namesake title, but I know that I was not reading the book. So what this means is that I can read the Adventures of Superman, the book that had been known as Superman before Crisis changed everything, with a fresh eye. These twenty year old stories are new for me and I am eager to see what Marv Wolfman and Jerry Ordway did with the character after Byrne made his changes. What I got to immediately witness was the debut of both Cat Grant and Professor Emil Hamilton to the supporting cast. In later issues, I knew of these characters, but I had no idea who created them and when. Now having read issue four hundred twenty four, I know the answer to those questions.
