middle of tanzania Over the last couple of days, I finally made some more progress on the Paul Theroux book Dark Star Safari and I am still unsure what to think about Africa. Theroux never considers himself a tourist and generally abhors anything to do with tourism, thus his version of Africa has nothing to do with safaris. His Africa is full of poverty, corruption, begging locals and rude foreign charity workers yet he repeatedly calls the place beautiful. To be fair, I guess what he is trying to say is that the place has potential, if only the people there could be motivated to take care of themselves. |
