I Can Wait

Due to some heavy illness among the staff, I got to be a computer operator for part of the day at work. I do not miss that job at all. Traditionally speaking the computer operator position is the entry level position in a computer shop that takes all the crap for everyone else.

What makes it even worse is that operations always seems to have some kind of squabbling going on. The people just bicker about one another all of the time. Sometimes its the usual day shift night shift problems. Other times its just pure personality conflict. There is a lot to be said for working alone.

Anyway today two of the day shift people were sick and one of the night shift people stayed until someone could get there. This meant the night shift guy was going to have an eighteen hour day all by himself. So I was asked to help out.

The night shift guy was my counterpart on the front half of the week, when I used to work nights. This meant that we never saw one another, but we knew of each other. The thing was that we relied more on each other than the day shift, because the day people only vaguely knew what we did at night. Then again we only vaguely knew what they did and this was very obvious this morning. He hadn't worked days in over a year and neither had I in that department. Oh well. You have to take whatever help you can get at times.

I went shopping for a new television tonight. Nineteen inches should be enough for me, because I seemed to get by just fine with thirteen inches for a decade. Plus the television doesn't have to be the focal point of my living room. The whole massive entertainment system has never been my thing.

Looking at the televisions tonight, I realized just how old my television is compared to what is on the market today. My old one was cable ready and had a remote. That was it. Those were the only two features that I really needed. Today they try to make them with any many features as possible whether you want them or not. I almost wish that you could configure your own television just like a computer.

None of what they offer for features really appeals to me. I don't really think that I need picture in picture or a feature that lets you surf the other channels when a commercial comes on and then returns to that channel when the commercial is over. I think that I can just go to the bathroom instead when a commercial comes on. Or maybe I could sit there until its over.

So tomorrow night its back to the store with my friend's truck to haul it home. There is no way that I could possibly squeeze one of those boxes that holds the television in my car.
