The Avengers

Uma Thurman is not Diana Rigg. Oh, she may sport a leather outfit and she may know John Steed, but its not the same. It never is as far as I can tell. Something gets lost in the translation from television to the big screen. The unwritten rule is that they always have to tamper with the mythos and The Avengers movie was no exception.

Oh, there were hints of the series in the movie. A good example would be Mrs. Peel entering a house with a black and white Escher staircase. I seem to remember an episode where she was trapped in a house decorated completely in black and white, so this was acceptable to me. I will also concede that Ralph Fiennes had the mannerisms of Steed down, but it just wasn't right to me. The best way that I can describe it was that the British element was missing.

The Avengers that I remember was classic British camp not a second class James Bond organization.

The biggest disappointment was the love angle between Steed and Mrs. Peel. Yes, the sexual tension was there in the series, but they never kissed. Steed would never do such a thing. The British are so much better at understatement then Americans. Of course, Americans call it repression.

Seeing Sean Connery as a villain was even worse than seeing Uma as Mrs. Peel. He has fallen so far in my mind. Then again I have a soft spot in my heart for Michael Caine and him in The Man Who Would Be King. I love that film. He rises to power and falls just as fast.

The Man in the Iron Mask was my other film selection for the day and this really didn't impress me either. Maybe I missed out on something growing up, but I just don't find the Three Musketeers to be very exciting. Swashbuckling does nothing for me. On the other hand, I do watch Highlander from time to time. Maybe if the Frenchmen severed heads it would be more exciting.

I can hear the cars on the freeway mingling with the sound of the crickets as I type this entry. They compete for my attention through the window. What I really should be doing is sleeping, yet here I am trying to get caught up on my journal. Once again I have fallen behind and it is bothering me.

The other missing days should be up tomorrow. Yes, I know that I have said that before, but they should be ready by then.
