a blizzard weekend

I was even more confused than usual for most of the day. Due to a string of circumstances I was sent home early from work. It wasn't because I had done anything wrong, it was just slow. So I was home by three in the morning instead of eight thirty in the morning, which definitely worked toward my advantage.

The weatherman had been predicting a blizzard here and we got one. Close to fifteen inches fell here in Milwaukee. Thankfully I missed driving in it. When I left work at two thirty this morning, the snow had just started to fall. The roads were still in good condition and visiblity wasn't that bad, but all of that changed as the day wore on.

Part of me was more than happy to go home, when my boss said that I could leave. My cold was still lingering and any more rest that I could get was greatly appreciated. Of course when I got home I couldn't fall asleep right away. My cold and the fact that I am usually awake at that time kept me up. Since I couldn't sleep very well, I would wander to the window about every other hour and look at the snow coming down.

Then as the day wore on, I started to wonder if I should even try to go into work that night. It didn't look as though the snow was going to stop any time soon and they kept declaring snow emergencies for different parts of the city. It became a small battle between my duty to work and my desire to avoid an accident. Was it really worth my effort to drive into work for one more night and risk getting stranded in a ditch? Plus when I drive there are very few people on the roads. It would be just me in the dark. Was my job worth me risking a blizzard with wind chills of twenty degrees blow zero and poor visibility?

Eventually I decided that it wasn't and called in and said I wasn't coming into work. To support my excuse I mentioned the two foot drifts that were surrounding my car in the driveway. The person at work who answered the phone had been there since eight in the morning and it was after nine thirty at night when I called. I don't think that they were expecting people to come in when they had people there who probably couldn't leave.

So thanks to the weather I got a longer weekend to get over my cold. I'll find out next week how many people actually came into work instead of staying home.
