Michelangelo sibyl from the Sistine Chapel

Yesterday really did mess me up. The combination of my cold and the somewhat unfounded guilt of staying home from work made for a miserable day. I doubt that few people enjoy being ill, but I find it almost impossible to tolerate not being able to do anything. Lying on the couch for most of the day made me feel so lethargic and useless. I couldn't concentrate enough to read and watching television made me even more irritable. I know that the rest was good for me, but it was still trying. Besides I need to get better quick, because the last thing that I need is an ear infection when I board the plane for California next Sunday.

In my semi-vegetative state I caught an episode of Xena on television. Now I may not be a regular viewer of the program, but I found this particular episode to be more odd than usual. Apparently they wanted to showcase the singing ability of Lucy Lawless and a few other cast members. There were a number of songs sprinkled throughout the show. Here were these quasi-medieval people singing what sounded like show tunes to me. Maybe I can look forward to dance routines in upcoming episodes.

I shovelled for about an hour and a half this morning. During that time I managed to free my car from the two foot drifts that were surounding it and cleared the three foot drifts at the end of the driveway. The snow was light and easy to move. Actually it reminded me of the fake snow that they use on television, because it was so light. As I shovelled I would stop every so often and just look around. The snow may have brought the city to a halt yesterday, but it sure did make everything look more appealing.

Shovelling isn't my responsibility anymore, but I needed to get out of the house. Mark had tried a few times yesterday, but it was useless with the wind and falling snow. Everything that he had done was quickly covered over by snow. Besides it felt good to be doing something active once again after lying around all day yesterday. Sweating felt good and it made me feel alive again. I needed to release some energy after being inert for most of yesterday.

I have to give the postal service some credit. Despite everything that happened yesterday they still delivered my mail and it was on time. I had to dry it out when I brought it inside, but at least I had it.

Sometime during the day I discovered snow between the outer and inner windows of my bedroom. The wind had been coming from the east all day yesterday and must have forced it inside. I'm glad we don't have blizzards more often, because if we did my bedroom windows would be packed with snow.

I started to think why I didn't remember all of these problems last winter. Then I realized that I spent most of last winter with Brenda at her place where the cost of heat was included. It wasn't often that I was cold there. Not only did we have each other for body heat, but her bed was heated. Although she did like to keep the window open just a crack every once in a while.

I'm not sure what I am expecting out of my trip to California. Oh, I definitely want to have fun, but I'm not sure what they might mean. Then again I don't really have a clear mental image of California. For me it is a jumble of Steinbeck and what I have seen on television. Part of me finds it sad that I have never been there before and I am nearly thirty, but all of that will change soon enough.

California Dan brought this site to my attention. Apparently this man does a talk radio show where he provides the voice for the host and the supposed guests. Everyone on the show is him. The humor comes in when people call the show and think that it is legitimate. Something like this is really indicative of Dan who not only does an excellent imitation of R. C. Collins, but can also do a good Rocky the Squirrel impression.
